Software Developer (Co-op - September 2019)

Who we are and what we do

Founded in 2011, Mappedin powers search and discovery indoors, enabling consumers to find what they're looking for with speed and ease. Our software platform provides industry leading tools to manage dynamic indoor spatial data and offer wayfinding experiences for customer-facing applications, including a recent collaboration with Apple Maps.

Mappedin works with the ten largest malls in Canada, the largest REITs in the US, and in stores, hospitals, campuses, and airports around the world.

The two teams hiring for software developers this upcoming term:

The Tools team at Mappedin works on our core platform and is what enables our clients to keep their maps up-to-date. We also provide search and analytics information to our customers, allowing them to make better decisions fueled by data. As technology improves daily, we need to continue advancing our Map Editor to stay at the top of our game.

The Consumer team at Mappedin enables our customers to deliver the best possible experience to their end users by building robust SDKs and easy to use applications. We help them dream of what's possible, and then help turn those dreams into reality.

Who you are and what you’ll do

(Platform) You love to work with the newest technology, are passionate about solving complicated problems, and want to contribute to our further success. We expect you to build for the future and keep challenging us on our views of what's best for Mappedin's future.

(Consumer) You make products that are intuitive and efficient, and good looks are important to you. Your passion for web development drives you to keep up with new web technology trends and you understand why web development is a perfect blend of both power and elegance.

As part of the Development team and reporting to the Software Development Manager, you will be helping us develop and improve our mapping tools, consumer applications, and occasionally backend services:

Map Editor:

  • A content management system that allows clients to create, edit, and manage all of their existing properties and maps
  • Analytics dashboard

Mappedin Web:

  • A mobile first web application that lets a partner embed a localized 3D map with a 2D fall back, smart search and wayfinding, directly into their website
  • Powered by React and our own Mappedin Web SDK
  • Mappedin Dynamic Directory / Dynamic Directory Plus:
  • A 3D web application installed on 60? directory screens to provide indoor navigation, search, and location information for indoor venues with full offline functionality
  • Powered by React and our own Mappedin Web SDK

Other not yet released projects

You are highly interested in learning about or already have experience in:

  • JavaScript and modern web stacks - ideally React, Webpack, and npm
  • UI/UX
  • Three.js

What are some challenges?

Rendering 3D maps across multiple browsers in a performant manner and ensuring a consistent experience while adapting to device form factors. Producing easily themeable applications that don’t break when put into a partner’s website.

There is a lot of discovery work involved as we frequently do things that are ahead of current technology.

We also encounter tough problems that require a lot of math. It’s not a requirement for this role, but if you enjoy solving interesting geometry problems, we’d love to have your input.

Behind the scenes

We use a variety of technology and tools that currently include JavaScript, React, Three.js, Webpack, WebGL, Node.js, MongoDB, ElasticSearch, and Kibana.

We recognize developers are most effective when they’re allowed to get into the zone; therefore, we run an agile development process designed to give our developers as much uninterrupted development time as possible. Most days the only meeting you’re looking at is the morning standup.

It’s fun to work on nice clean code bases but the realities of moving fast means sometimes the code base gets a bit messy. We always make sure we have 20% dev time available to do refactoring and retire technical debt.

There’s a lot of trust here at Mappedin. We work flexible hours and we will do what it takes to get things done if we said we would do it. We stay curious and will always ask each other questions, rarely making assumptions. We recognize that we are all different and will challenge each other’s views and perceptions from time to time, resulting in constructive and healthy debates, but that never stops us from all eating lunch together every day. If you want to join our sports team, we have a blank bright orange jersey here waiting for your name to be printed on it.

Lastly, we have an awesome office cat who loves attention. Allergic? Don't worry, Hobbes stays on the other side of the office and won’t bother you unless you decide to work in the collaboration area there.
