Ega Cheung is a Software Developer Co-op at Mappedin. Joining us for a second co-op term, we discuss her experience at Mappedin, what she enjoys most about her role, and how she would describe Mappedin’s culture and work environment. Ega, thanks for chatting with me today. To start off, can you tell us about your current role at Mappedin?
I am a Software Developer Co-op working on Mappedin’s pre-built applications. I mainly work on the front-end for the Responsive Web App and the Digital Directories, as well as some other miscellaneous projects.
You joined Mappedin as a co-op in September 2021 and came back for a second co-op term in May 2022. For other co-op students wondering, how has your experience at Mappedin been?
It’s been really great. I initially joined as a Software Tester but Mappedin was trying to move away from manual testing, so I ended up getting offered a Software Developer position. During that transition, everyone at Mappedin was really willing and happy to help me. They gave me a lot of resources and training and took the time to help me grow as a developer which is really nice. I’ve received a lot of great opportunities, I’ve learned so much, and I know the things that I’ve learned here will help me in the future.
What made you decide to join Mappedin for a second co-op term?
It’s the people! Everyone here is so nice, and you can tell that they really want you to succeed and enjoy your time at work. Specific to the Development team, every week there’s a gaming time where we get together and play games like Skribbl.io, Minecraft, GeoGuessr, and other online games. Not only is that a lot of fun, but it’s also a really easy way to interact with people that you might not have talked to before.
What do you like most about working at Mappedin or in your role specifically?
The mentorship and impactful work. My Staff Software Developer Team Lead, Ben Liu, has made a lot of effort to make the co-op experience better. He actively asks for feedback on how to improve the experience, and takes my suggestions to heart. Most importantly, you don’t really feel like an intern because you’re working on what everyone else is working on. You have a level of agency, and you really feel like what you do has a real impact. It’s also really cool to see the things that you’ve worked on in person, like at Conestoga Mall.
How would you describe Mappedin’s culture and team environment?
Warm and welcoming! Everyone is really nice, and I think it’s really clear that the people you work for and work with genuinely want to see you succeed and have a great time. They’re always there to support and help you.
Mappedin is a remote-first environment. How has working remotely been for you?
Working remotely has been really nice. As a Software Developer, it’s an easier transition for me because it’s all I’ve ever known, but it’s also really nice to have the option to go into the office if I want to. I think it also demonstrates a lot about the amount of trust that Mappedin has with you, even despite the pandemic.
Do you have any tips about working from home?
Always have water or fruit near you! Dehydration sneaks up on you, so it’s really important to stay hydrated.
